Enabling the Commons Through Advanced, People-first Platforms

The Rose Encoded builds platforms that make the productive economy visible, measurable, and financeable. In so doing, TREC creates the curriculum and platforms that help credit unions and their members explore what owning, governing, and building together can look like.

The commons is already in operation.

Every day, cooperatives, care communities, farmers, and neighborhood businesses generate genuine economic value. Credit unions have always understood this. For over a hundred years, they've held the view that people accomplish more together than alone, lending to people who'd otherwise been turned away, investing in communities others ignored, building institutions that serve members instead of shareholders.

TREC is a cooperative specializing in product design and instructional design, headquartered in Portland, Oregon, with team members and associates in the United States, Ukraine, and Lebanon. We build the curriculum and platforms that help credit unions and their members explore what owning, governing, and building together can look like.

We're not here to tell you the financial world is changing. You already know that. We're here to show you that credit union values are exactly what the future of finance will need.

A Better Relationship Between Credit Unions and Their Members

The relationship between a credit union and its members has always been built on shared ownership. What changes with the platforms TREC builds is how much of that relationship can be seen, measured, and acted on every day.

Co-Creating the Platforms That Bring Credit Union Membership to Life

TREC designs its platforms alongside the communities that will use them, because the people closest to the problem are also closest to the solution. As members explore Altera Studio and begin building — through labor, investment, or participation in shared governance — the platform will give their credit union a real-time, verifiable account of what that member is building. This offers more than a credit score or a deposit balance. It offers a fuller picture of a member's economic activity inside the cooperative community their credit union serves, making the ownership that's always defined membership visible in everyday financial life.

That picture will open doors that didn't exist before.

Here's what that could look like. A member who has spent two years contributing to an REIC could build a record their credit union can see and act on. A farming family using equipment through an AEC could demonstrate financial discipline no loan application has ever captured. A care community that has governed itself and sustained a therapeutic farm could earn a kind of institutional trust no credit report conveys.

TREC's platforms will help members build things together, and help credit unions see what their members are capable of — giving both the tools to move forward. That's what a deeper member relationship will look like once the right infrastructure is in place to support it.

Our Team

The Rose Encoded consists of experts in seven fields and has offices in Portland, Seattle, Bellingham, Boulder, Kyiv, and Dubai. Each member contributes a distinct professional skill to the design and development of each platform. In combination, they offer the governance, design, engineering, and program management required to turn the Cooperative Principles into real infrastructure.

Haeedr Alsalman — UX Design Apprentice · Kyiv, Ukraine

Haeedr specializes in interaction design, visual clarity, and usability across our various platforms, with a particular focus on the accessibility standards required for cooperative tools. With practical experience in user flows, personas, and interface design, he ensures that all members can use our platforms. Being fluent in Arabic, English, and Russian, Haeedr applies a detailed and human-centered approach to each screen.

Bounce Brewer — Data Governance & Program Management Lead · Seattle, WA

Bounce brings to bear more than fifteen years' experience in technology program management, having previously been in charge of data governance and analytics at one of the largest technology companies in the world. Her role involves ensuring that member data is treated with integrity, that vendor relationships are to the advantage of the federation, and that complicated projects remain on schedule. This in turn respects the trust that members place in their organizations. She holds certifications in project management, privacy program management, and AI governance.

Collin Ferguson — General Circle Lead & Federated Systems Architect · Portland, OR

Collin is one of the co-founders of The Rose Encoded and has played the leading role in the development of our governance and platform design. He is in charge of the product vision, the cooperative measurement model, and the federated infrastructure that underpins SkyDeck Education and Finance. Collin brings together experience in product strategy, UX research, cooperative governance, and learning-systems design to make economic activity visible to credit unions, which have always been aware of it but have not had the necessary tools for measuring it.

Hiba Ghrair — Instructional Designer, Accessibility Lead & Sulook Project Lead · Dubai, UAE

Hiba, who is board certified as a behaviour analyst (BCBA) and also works as an instructional designer, is in charge of developing Sulook, the patient portal that will be used by the members of therapeutic farm communities together with SkyDeck Education and Finance; although the financial component of our system assesses cooperative contribution, Sulook provides the care and access services for these members and ensures that those who have usually been left out still have the door open.

Matt Heitzenroder — Cloud Engineer · Bellingham, WA

Matt has almost twenty years' experience in the construction of distributed infrastructure for the healthcare, government, and financial industries and is now a Cloud Platform Engineer at Kaiser Permanente. He was one of the co-founders of Orchestrate, a Cloud Database-as-a-Service which was acquired by CenturyLink, and as a result has experience in both infrastructure and in running startups. Because of his expertise in distributed systems and his interest in regenerative farming, Matt is well suited to the communities we serve.

Brian Krewson — UX Integrity Lead · Boulder, CO

Brian ensures that the things we build comply with the standards established by our research. He checks designs and implementations against quality criteria, addresses edge cases before release, and maintains the reliability members can count on. Through his efforts, our platforms always treat the people who use them with respect.

Kamau Rogers — Systems Architecture Lead · Portland, OR

Kamau has more than thirty years' experience in leadership roles in engineering and technology throughout Silicon Valley, Europe, Africa, and Asia; he is responsible for making the architectural decisions regarding our federated technology stack and keeps the aspects of privacy, liquidity, and audit separate, ensuring that our infrastructure serves the members rather than the other way around.

Sanela Ruznic — UX & Governance Strategist · Portland, OR

Sanela is one of the co-founders of The Rose Encoded and holds a Master's degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Portland State University; she views cooperative governance in the same way that a planner views public space—that is, as an environment which influences behavior over time and one that must be designed with long-term stewardship in mind rather than simply for initial acceptance. The way she works ensures that our platforms remain trustworthy and resilient as more credit unions and members join.

A Global Team, a Local Mission

The Rose Encoded has its headquarters in Portland, Oregon, and employs people in Seattle and Bellingham, Washington; Boulder, Colorado; Kyiv, Ukraine; and Dubai, UAE. The company is also a member of the Patio Cooperative, which is a global peer network comprising more than 80 independent technology service providers in 24 countries. The problems we are addressing are local in nature. The group which is solving them, on the other hand, is global.

Are you ready to open the door together?

People have been shown over the course of a century that it is possible to own things collectively, and we are the ones who have developed the platforms to carry this forward.
